Honoring Our Past by Investing in Our Future

The Newark Scholars Program

For over 10 years, the Newark Scholars Program has served students from NA’s origin city. Today, NA remains proud of its historical ties to Newark and seeks to provide talented students from our namesake city with the very best independent school education. NA established the Newark Scholars Program in 2012 to provide full scholarships for up to six students each year who live in or attend school in Newark. Students designated as Newark Scholars receive the full cost of tuition, fees, books, transportation, equipment, required field trips, the Immersion Experience and summer enrichment opportunities. NA recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the inception of the Newark Scholars Program, and the 12 scholars that have graduated since 2016 and eight that are currently matriculating. We are proud to share an overview of where our graduates are now:

Attending Newark Academy and being part of the Newark Scholars Program are honestly the best things that happened to me as a teenager. I did not know it then, and it still warms my heart with gratitude now, but the Newark Scholars Program gave me an amazing education, introduced me to dedicated educators and provided me with lifelong friends.

Celebrating our Malone Scholarship Program

In 1997, Dr. John C. Malone and his family founded The Malone Family Foundation with a clear mission: to improve access to quality education for talented students lacking financial resources, particularly at the secondary school level. Inspired by Dr. Malone’s own experience as a scholarship recipient, the foundation aimed to create opportunities for exceptional students nationwide.

Newark Academy was honored to be among the first schools selected as a Malone Scholar institution in 2000 when the Foundation awarded NA $2 million. Since then, the foundation's generous endowment has had a transformative impact on our community. The Malone Scholars Endowment not only covers tuition but also supports additional expenses, ensuring these students fully experience all that Newark Academy has to offer.

To date, we have welcomed 23 Malone Scholars, each bringing unique talents and perspectives to our school. One former scholar, a 2010 graduate, shares, “My time at NA really set the trajectory for my life. The lessons I learned in and outside of the classroom have been invaluable and I take them forward with me everyday. Getting through the rigor of the school really shows you that you can get through anything and it was all made possible by the Malone scholarship.”

In his letter to scholarship recipients, John stated, “It is our dream that you will use this scholarship as your stepping stone to greater horizons…that you will enjoy your years at this wonderful school…and that you will optimize this springboard to earn your own scholarship to one of our nation’s great colleges or universities.”

As the Malone Family Foundation prepares to sunset its operations, it has made an additional gift of $500,000 to each Malone Scholar school, including Newark Academy, to further bolster their endowments. This gesture reaffirms their commitment to nurturing future generations of scholars.

Newark Academy is proud to uphold the vision of the Malone Family and is deeply grateful for their generosity's lasting impact on our scholars and our entire community.

NA Middle School Chamber Music Performs at Prestigious Chamber Music Society

Newark Academy’s Middle School Chamber Music was selected as one of just 14 middle school ensembles in the New York City metropolitan area to perform in the Chamber Music Society (CMS) Young Ensembles Program in the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio at CMS at Lincoln Center on May 23, 2024.

Under the leadership of Orchestra Director Oliver Hagen, the ensemble, featuring Rohit Barua ’28 (cello), Mia Li ’28 (violin) and Sathvik Subramanian ’27 (piano), performed the second movement of Mendelssohn’s D minor Piano Trio, op. 49. As part of the program, the NA musicians also received professional coaching from Chamber Music Society pianist Sahun Sam Hong prior to taking the stage.

“This is an incredible achievement for NA’s Middle School program to be recognized by one of the top chamber music performing organizations in the country, and to have the opportunity to work with one of their world-class artists,” says Hagen.
